πŸ™ŒπŸΌ 7 Stretches to Soothe Knitters Hands

Whether it's the result of age, repetitive stress, or just cold weather, most of us experience some hand pain during our knitting journey.

While ergonomics and switching up knitting styles can mitigate stress on your hands, stretching is a proven way to reduce pain.

Our friends at We Are Knitters put together a list of useful stretches with some simple animations to demonstrate each technique.

These 7 exercises address all of the important joints an movements your hands make.

Each takes about 20 seconds to perform and the entire routine can be finished in less than 3 minutes.

Doing this before and after a knitting session can help relieve tension in your hands AND help prevent injury in the future.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Be careful not to put additional pressure or strain on your hands or fingers during these movements. You should only move within a natural, comfortable range. Otherwise you might do more damage than good.

But if stretching isn't your thing, consider trying Portuguese style knitting.

This technique uses your thumbs to manipulate stitches while leaving your hands entirely stress free.

Loop Stitch

This stitch looks a bit like garter stitch, but if you look close you'll see it's more than that.

Using some well placed slip stitches this pattern ends up being more open and flexible than garter.

It's not as simple as knitting every stitch on every row, but it's certainly not difficult.

Pattern Pick

Dorothy Shawl by Jake Kenyon

This lovely textured shawl was inspired by the designer's late grandmother and her living room decor.

Using the loop stitch featured above, this pattern is nice a squishy, making for a cozy weekend knit.

And since it's knit with Lion Brand Wool-Ease also knits up quick!
